Message Notes-God's Discipline

Here are the notes to Pastor Steve’s message for week #6 of “X Marks The Spot” on Sunday, June 27, 2021. Feel free to print them and follow along during the message at 10:00 a.m on Facebook and YouTube.

The X that marks the spot in our discipleship;  _______________ through _______________.

In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.  5 And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son?  “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, 6 Because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.  Hebrews 12:4-6

Helicopter Parenting:  "It means being involved in a child's life in a way that is overcontrolling, overprotecting, and overperfecting, in a way that is in excess of responsible parenting."  Dr. Dunnewold

"The problem is that, once parenting becomes governed by fear and decisions based on what might happen, it’s hard to keep in mind all the things kids learn when we are not guiding each step. Failure and challenges teach kids new skills, and, most importantly, teach kids that they can handle failure and challenges."  Dr. Dunnewold

“God harnesses the adverse circumstances of life to conform us to the image of Christ.”

Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?   8 If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.  9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spirits and live!  10 They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness.  No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.  Hebrews 12:7-11

A couple of thoughts on holiness.

  • God is more concerned about your _______________ than he is your _______________.

  • Happiness is only _______________ deep while holiness is _______________ deep.

“I am afraid that all the grace I have got out of my comfortable and easy times and happy hours might almost lie on a penny. But the good that I have received from my sorrows and pains and griefs is altogether incalculable. What do I not owe to the hammer and the anvil, the fire and the file? Affliction is the best bit of furniture in my house.”  Charles Spurgeon

Today’s application

  1. What is one challenge that I’m facing right now?

  2. What is God trying to teach me in what I’m facing?
