I'm Invested

These are the notes from Pastor Steve’s message from the third week of the “I’m In” series on January 19th, 2020. You can also watch the message here and fill in the notes below as part of your personal growth in Christ this week.

My identity in Christ.

  • I’m____________________

Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20 (NLT)

God created us to ____________________, not ____________________.

What gets in the way of pouring out our lives?

  • The Scarcity Mindset.

    • ________ supplies.

    • We ________.

    • We ________.

    • We ________.

    • Hit repeat!

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.  He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’ 18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”  “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’  21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”  Luke 12:16-21

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”  13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.” 14 They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.  Luke 9:16-17

What helps break the scarcity mindset in us?

  • The tithe

  • A Hebrew word which means a tenth.

  • It’s a Biblical principle of giving away 10% or one-tenth of my income.

Why would I tithe?

  1. It teaches me to put ____________________.

  2. It builds my ____________________.

  3. It ____________________ for the work of God's church.

The purpose of tithing is to teach you to always put God first in your lives.  Deuteronomy 14:23 (TLB)

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty.  See if I don't throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough for it.   Malachi 3:10

What kind of mindset should I have as a Christ-follower?

  • The Generous mindset.

    • God ________.

    • We ________.

    • God ________.

    • ________ grows.

  • What MORE could we do?

  • What MORE could we do if EVERYONE did their part?

What does being invested look like?

  1. I will trust God and ____________________ by giving something.

  2. I will trust God and start giving ____________________.

    • Set it and forget it.

    • Just follow the prompts at tpclive.org/give

  3. I will trust God and start ____________________.

  4. I will trust God and give ____________________.

Questions to grow your faith in Christ this week:

  1. By looking at our checkbooks and calendars, we can tell where we are most invested.  If a close friend were to look at both of those, what would they say you are most invested in?

  2. Read Luke 12:16-21.  What do you think it means to be rich towards God?  Is that something that is true in your life? How would you tell others you are rich towards God?

  3. Many Americans live with a scarcity mindset when it comes to money.  This cycle says, God supplies, we consume, we lack, we fear and then we repeat.  What part of this cycle do you see most in your life? Why?

  4. Read Luke 9:12-17.  What stands out to you the most in that story?  What causes you to believe or not believe that God can do the same kind of miracles in your life?

  5. God wants us to have a mindset of abundance which says God supplies, we give, God multiplies, and our faith grows.  When have you seen that cycle work out in your life

  6. Read Malachi 3:10.  What principle of tithing that was taught today most challenges you?

  7. What is keeping you living a life that says, “I’m invested?”  What is your step that you need to take today to be more invested in your church, Turning Point Church?
